A bad egg can really ruin your day… or several days.  So how can you tell if an egg is bad?  I needed to know yesterday and I thought I knew, but had to look it up to be sure.  I didn’t want my wife to get sick from her egg sandwich.  As it turn out, the entire batch in the fridge was too old to use :-(  Good thing we had some fresh ones…….

Food poisoning is one of the worst experiences a person can go through, and it can even be lethal. Eggs can be the source of some superb meals, but they can also be the source of food poisoning if they are eaten when they’ve gone bad. How do you tell when an egg is fresh or if it has gone bad, without cracking it open to find out?

Steps

1. Place the egg into a bowl of water. The water level should be deeper than the egg’s length.
2. Observe what the egg does.
   • Fresh eggs will sink to the bottom of the bowl and lie on their sides.
   • Slightly older eggs (about one week) will lie on the bottom but bob slightly.
   • If the egg balances on its smallest end, with the large end reaching for the sky, it’s probably around three weeks old.
   • Eggs that float at the surface are bad and should not be consumed.
3. Crack the egg open and look carefully.
   • Blood spots (also referred to as “meat” spots) don’t signify a bad or fertilized egg. It’s caused by a ruptured blood vessel during the formation of the egg. Since blood spots are diluted as the egg ages, their presence actually means you have a fresh egg. You can eat it safely, or remove the blood spot with the tip of a knife, if it makes you feel better.[1]
   • Stringy, rope-like strands of egg white are chalazae which are present in every egg to keep the yolk centered. They’re not a sign that the egg is bad or fertilized, and they can be consumed safely or removed.[1]
   • An egg white that is cloudy or has a yellow or greenish cast to it is caused by carbon dioxide not having had enough time to escape from the shell and is especially common in fresh eggs.[1]
4. Smell the egg. With time, bacteria break down the proteins in the whites of the egg and create a gas. This gas is called hydrogen sulfide, better known as “rotten egg gas.”

Tips

• The floating test works because the air pocket inside the egg gets bigger with time as the egg contents lose both moisture and carbon dioxide. As the air pocket gets bigger, the egg is more likely to float.
• When a recipe calls for a lot of yolks or whites, separate the eggs in a different bowl, then dump the contents with the rest of the egg yolks (or whites). There’s nothing more wasteful than cracking open egg number 14 in a 15 yolk recipe and finding out that it is a bad egg. You could also test all the eggs for freshness using the floating technique.
• If you’re worried about the egg being fertilized, keep in mind that most eggs come from large-scale operations where laying hens are never exposed to a rooster. If the eggs come from a smaller farm where roosters are present, there is a chance they might be fertilized, but the only way to tell is by candling (holding a light up to the egg in a dark room and looking for blood vessels, movement, and chick development). That being said, fertilized eggs are no more or less nutritious than unfertilized eggs and both are safe to eat.

As most people who have stummbled across my blog over the last couple of years know I am a Chad Vader fan.  Chad is Darth Vaders younger brother who happens to work at a supermarket.  Very funny stuff.  My new job has kept me away from YouTube for quite a while now so I discovered today that there a lots of Chad videos that I have missed.  Running through them made for a very entertaining morning :-)  So I just wanted to say thank you to Blame Society Productions for putting these great shows out!

The Movement

I really thought my blog was dead.  It’s been 4 months since I have posted, but I saw some very sad news today.  George Carlin died last night, Sunday June 22, at the age of 71 of a heart attack.

George was a hero of mine on many different levels for a long time. I was introduced to him at a young age and thought he was cool, mostly because he cursed a lot :-)  When I got to High School I started to understand a lot of what he was trying to get me to think about. When I saw him live while I was in college, I got it. He wasn’t just a profane old man, he was someone who tried to illustrate the obsurdities of what is now modern life. He just wanted people to think about what we do and why we do it.

He was an old hippie, not that that’s a bad thing, but George was so much more. He helped spawn a generation of comedeains and even changed the laws that the FCC follows.  His “7 Dirty Words” skit spawned a lawsuit that went all the way to the Supreme Court. He almost single handedly changed the face of television and radio. Not all the changes have been good, but he challenged the conventions of free speech, normality and the establishment making this country a better place to live as far as I am concerned.

George, I’m gonna miss you!

Couple of questions here……

1     Has anyone ever died in an “eating”contest? Well unless that contest involved some sort of poisonus substance.

2     WTF is fairy cake?????

An inquest is to be held on a man who died during a contest to see who could eat the most fairy cakes.

The man, thought to be from Birmingham, collapsed at a Swansea nightclub during the event at the end of a party to raise funds for an art exhibition.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances following the incident at the city’s Monkey Cafe and Bar early on Friday.

The coroner has been informed and the family have been told.

It is believed attempts were made by staff and customers at the nightclub to revive the man.

In a statement, club owners Amanda Davey and Paul Dyke said: “We are all devastated by this tragic accident.

“We are all in shock.

“It was a tragic accident and very sad and should serve as a cautionary tale.

After all those spiffy TV ads it seems Enzyte is full of, well, nothing. Now as a veteran TV watcher, these ads have always fallen under the “truly unbelievable” category. Oh well…. see ya Bob…..

Enzyte maker found guilty of fraud

A federal court jury on Friday found the owner of a company that sells “male enhancement” tablets and other herbal supplements guilty of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, bank fraud and money laundering.

Steve Warshak, whose conviction was reported Friday by The Cincinnati Enquirer, is founder and president of Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals, which distributes Enzyte and a number of products alleged to boost energy, manage weight, reduce memory loss and aid restful sleep.

Television ads for Enzyte feature “Smiling Bob,” a goofy, grinning man whose life gets much better after he uses the product, which allegedly boosted his sexual performance.

Warshak, 40, could face more than 20 years in prison and his company could have to forfeit tens of millions of dollars.

Good for him!

Larry the Cable Guy on Weight Loss: ‘I’m Down an Olsen’

Comedian Larry the Cable Guy, who shed 50 lbs. since last year, jokes he’s lost so much weight “I’m down an Olsen!”

To celebrate his weight loss, which he achieved on the NutriSystem diet, “I immediately took my wife out to eat and had everything I’m not supposed to,” says the Blue Collar comedian, whose new big-screen comedy, Witless Protection, opens Friday.

These days Larry (real name: Dan Whitney) works out twice a day and travels with a personal trainer while on tour. “I do weights, 50 minutes of cardio and then another 50 minutes of cardio at night,” he says.
